‘Pathways of Ngunnawal’: A Story Woven Into Every Thread

The 20th Australian Masters Games general volunteer and sports convenor uniforms, and merchandise to feature artwork by Jody-Sherie Godfrey titled Pathways of Ngunnawal.

The Australian Masters Games (AMG) brings together community, connection, and competition on Ngunnawal Country. This year, the heartbeat of First Nations culture will be carried by every athlete, supporter, and volunteer.

This year, Indigenous artwork will feature on AMG uniforms and merchandise. With the original artwork by Jody-Sherie Godfrey, Pathways of Ngunnawal is a tribute to the land, the people and the journeys that bring people together.

Jody was born in Meanjin, moved through Gubbi Gubbi country and now lives on Ngunnawal land. Inspired by the shifting seasons, the mountains, the waterways and the wildlife, her art showcases the beauty of the local land.

“This artwork symbolises the richness and beauty of Ngunnawal Country,” Jody said.

“The word Canberra comes from the Ngunnawal language and means ‘meeting place’. I’ve illustrated this through Civic Centre and the lore site where Parliament House stands. It symbolises community, and coming together to learn, listen, connect and celebrate,” she explained.

The artwork is filled with meaning and connection. Mountain ranges represent strength, resilience and the ability to overcome adversity. Kangaroo tracks mark the abundance of wildlife. Footprints show life’s journey, whether following in the steps of others or creating one’s own path.

Creating this piece has been a deeply personal journey for Jody, shaped by her connection to culture and country. Jody shared that “Painting is a way to express stories and identity. It brings calm to my mind and helps me connect with the land. Walking through Ngunnawal Country inspires me every day.”

Jody’s artwork is a celebration of strength, pride and cultural survival. It also mirrors the spirit of the Games, a space where individuals from across the nation gather to share their passion, their stories and their strength.

“The Australian Masters Games is an opportunity for people to join collectively from across the nation for one purpose. This is a time to come together to compete, to celebrate, to make new friends and lifelong relationships. Canberra is culturally significant and a place to put differences aside and commemorate in festivities,” Jody explained.

Seeing her artwork worn by participants from all over Australia is a moment of great pride. “I feel truly honoured and humbled. It’s a proud moment to see my design embraced by so many. I hope people understand that this artwork represents reconciliation; a bridge between cultures, built through respect and shared experience.”

Jody’s artwork, Pathways of Ngunnawal is more than a design. It’s a visual story that celebrates Country, culture and community. This October, it will be worn with pride and purpose by the people who make the Games what they are.

Uniforms featuring the artwork will be worn throughout the Games by general volunteers and sports convenors. Select merchandise items with Jody’s design will also be available for purchase online soon, and in-person during the Games.
