When Love’s the Prize

They say love is a game, but for some at the Australian Masters Games, love is the reward. Whether it’s the connection made through helping a fellow competitor, a shared victory on the court, or the camaraderie forged through competition, sport has a way of bringing people together like nothing else.

The thrill of the contest, the mutual passion for the game, and the unspoken understanding of dedication and teamwork create the perfect environment for sparks to fly. In a place where competitors push their limits and celebrate every triumph, finding love might just be the ultimate win.

As we celebrate the 20th edition of the Australian Masters Games, we look back at connections made and bonds formed through sport, highlighting how sport challenges and inspires you, and also connects people in unexpected and heartwarming ways.

Dawn & Peter Nelson-Furnell: Cupids Arrow hits a bullseye

Cupid’s arrow certainly hit Dawn Nelson-Furnell OAM and Peter Nelson-Furnell at the 2007 Australian Masters Games (AMG).

Dawn and Peter first met when they were competing in the Clout archery event at the 11th Australian Masters Games in Adelaide.

That day was filled with sport, fun, and connection, and a special moment that sparked an undeniable bond.

Helping Dawn adjust her new mirror Clout sight, Peter first noticed Dawn in a moment of magic, saying that Dawn “put him under her spell”. Peter undeniably felt an instant connection at first sight, fondly recalling to the moment as “Dawn doing ‘that eye thing’.”

Both went on to win gold that day, making the experience even more special.

From competing at national and world championships to travelling the world together for archery, their shared passion has strengthened their relationship. Dawn’s achievements as a national-level athlete have taken her to the Commonwealth Games and Olympic squads and she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to Archery.

While Peter says Dawn would win if they ever competed against each other, he is her biggest support as a coach and competitor.

“We help each other motivate, steady and talk through problems and pressures. I’ve supported Dawn as a coach and spectator in many important competitions and have also competed side-by-side with her,” Peter said.

“Team, support and love” are three words that Dawn and Peter use to sum up their relationship. Their relationship with each other and with archery is so intertwined that they will never stop competing together.

“Many people need to take time out from relationships to compete, whereas competing is something we do together,” Peter and Dawn said.

They add, “Sport has given us so many opportunities, not just in competition but in life. We’ve travelled, met amazing people, and grown together in ways we never imagined.”

Peter and Dawn continue to celebrate each other’s wins and look to celebrate their 10th Australian Masters Games together this year.

Shaun & Floe: Love-All on the Tennis Court

For Shaun Summers, his journey to love began with a wooden tennis racket and a plan.

As an 18-year-old on King Island, he noticed Floe, a talented young player, competing in the local pennant competition. Wanting to get to know Floe, Shaun devised a strategy, asking her to be his doubles partner for the annual tennis tournament.

To his surprise, she said yes. Although they didn’t win, the real victory came in the form of a blossoming romance that would last a lifetime.

Shaun, a self-proclaimed ‘hack on the tennis court’ at the time, eventually fell in love with the sport as much as he did with Floe. Over the years, their shared passion has taken them across Australia and beyond, competing together in Masters Games events and making unforgettable memories along the way.

One particularly memorable moment came at the 19th Australian Masters Games in 2023. Shaun was suffering from a severe back injury, but Floe stepped up, covering the court while Shaun relied on sheer determination to keep swinging.

Despite the physical setback, they fought their way to a silver medal.

“It wasn’t always rosy on the court,” Shaun admitted, “but we know each other well enough to make it work. She gives me ‘the look,’ and I know that I have to calm down!”

“We’ve had our fair share of tense moments, but at the end of the day, it’s all about enjoying the game and each other’s company,” Shaun said, “winning is great, but sharing these experiences is even better.”

Through sport, they’ve had the chance to travel, explore new places, and connect with like-minded people.

“Competing together gives us something to look forward to,” Shaun added. “It’s not just about the competition, it’s about making memories, meeting great people, and experiencing new adventures as a couple.”

Advice for Couples Looking to Compete Together

For both couples, their advice to others is simple: do it together.

“Playing as a team strengthens your bond in ways you wouldn’t expect,” Dawn and Peter shared.

Dawn and Peter explained, “It’s one thing to cheer each other on from the sidelines, but it’s another to step onto the field together and experience the highs and lows side by side.”

“Put the pride and emotions aside,” Shaun suggested, “It’s not about winning or losing, it’s about the experience you share. And who knows? You might just find love along the way.”

As the countdown to the 20th Australian Masters Games continues, stories like these serve as a reminder that the event isn’t just about sport, it’s about friendships, fun and in some instances, finding love that lasts a lifetime.
