Part of Something Bigger

At the heart of every great sporting moment, there’s a team behind the scenes making it all happen. For us at the Australian Masters Games, we recognise our volunteers as the quiet champions of the Games.

Our volunteers bring the energy, welcome athletes, and turn a good event into a great one. As we gear up for the Australian Masters Games in Canberra (18 – 25 October 2025), we’re calling on people like you to join the team!

Volunteering isn’t just about lending a hand. It’s about passion, connection, and being part of something truly special.

For Mikhail Monteiro, now the Registrations Coordinator for the Australian Masters Games, it was volunteering that helped shape his career in the sports industry. Starting out in casual volunteer roles, Mikhail discovered not just a love for being part of events, but a real passion for working in sport.

“Volunteering has confirmed for me that working in the sports industry is where I belong. I love the early starts, the buzz of the crowd, and the smiles on people’s faces. At the end of the day, there’s this incredible pride knowing you were part of making it all happen,” Mikhail explained.

What started as a way to be closer to the action turned into a pathway to leadership, professional growth, and a career that thrives on energy, purpose, and people.

“One of my favourite experiences was working Patron Services for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2020. As a lifelong cricket fan, I always dreamed of being part of a major event, not just as a spectator, but as part of the team. The energy, the crowd, and being part of that historic final at the MCG was unforgettable,” Mikhail shared.

From cricket and swimming to world-class multisport events, Mikhail’s journey has been shaped by volunteering. And it’s given him more than just a resume boost, saying “I’ve gained so many skills; communication, leadership, problem solving and teamwork.”

“Most of all, I’ve been part of a community that truly values what we do,” Mikhail added.

And that same opportunity is open to you at this year’s milestone 20th edition of the Australian Masters Games. Whether you’re managing operations, greeting athletes, supporting logistics, or helping spectators find their way, your time as a volunteer can make a real and lasting impact not just on the Games but on the people who experience them.

From 18 to 25 October, Canberra will host thousands of athletes from across the nation and we need passionate, dedicated volunteers to help bring the Australian Masters Games to life.

“If you’re unsure about volunteering, I’d say just give it a go. You’ll be surprised by how much you get out of it. Volunteering isn’t just about giving up your time; it’s about being part of something bigger,” Mikhail reassured.

This is your chance to be part of something bigger

Whether you’re competing and have some spare time, a sports fan, a student, a retiree, or someone looking to give back; your energy and enthusiasm will help create unforgettable moments in the nation’s capital.

Be the reason someone crosses the finish line smiling. Be support behind the celebration. Be part of something bigger.
